Community Is Our Foundation
At SQUAD SOCIAL, thinking and making an active search for community is precisely what we are about. Community is our foundation. One of the things we love the most is receiving messages from LGBTQ+ people telling us about their experiences of feeling a sense of community amongst other LGBTQ+ people.
“I think the first time I experienced that sense of queer community was at a drag party. I was standing in the middle of the smoking area and watching everyone interact with each other: the affection and the respect and the colours and the expression of selves. It was the first time I ever felt like I belonged to a family that truly loved me and one another.” - Olivia, Queer, 23.
“I was always so cautious about joining a football team. The over emphasised masculinity on the field has always intimidated me. Joining a Gay football club was exactly what I needed. Some of the people from that club have become my family. It’s probably one of the best decisions of my life.” Joe, Gay, 28
“I found that by the age of 22 or 23, I identified less with my straight friends from university. They often didn’t understand the struggles I was going through and it was only when I started doing some community work at an LGBTQ+ centre that I realised that so many other Queer people had been through and understand some of the things that I had experienced. It’s not that I don’t appreciate my straight friends- of course, they’re wonderful- but it’s sometimes so important to be able to find people who truly understand your experiences.” - Alex, Gay, 26.
At SQUAD SOCIAL, everything we do is about creating a sense of community for LGBTQ+ people. Many of us have experienced that sense of family and community, and want to be able to share those experiences with LGBTQ+ people who are still searching, or who want to experience new communities and make new friends. The options available to finding LGBTQ+ communities that fit our personalities and our interests have often been limited. Bars and nightclubs aren’t for everyone. Yet there are hundreds of Queer communities in London alone, they can just often be hard to find or to hear about.
SQUAD SOCIAL would like to offer an easier and safe way to making those connections.
Already people are writing in to tell us about their experiences on the App so far:
“I’ve never felt comfortable in night club spaces and though I sometimes go to Gay Bars, I don’t make lasting connections with people that way. I’d love to be able to find a way of bonding with other LGBTQ+ people that doesn’t require going “out”. I really like the sound of SQUAD SOCIAL. I’ve already found someone willing to go a gig with me next week from the app!”
We want to help you find communities that work for you.
And don’t forget to tell us about your experiences and your stories!
